Simulated Trip
(This can be paired with Common Core module about runners)
A Prezi presentation will be created that uses a map of Mesoamerica paired with the use of runners as mail carriers. The runner will make his way to various cities and monuments that were important during that time. At each stop students will be able to learn about the specific place or piece of culture. Before the journey begins each student is given an envelope that they are not allowed to open until the end. As the runner makes his way to different locations, students jog in place as if they are a runner in ancient Mesoamerica. When the journey is completed, students can open their envelopes which have a small paragraph that sums up the job of a runner followed by these questions:
Why did the Incas need to have runners?
Who was usually chosen to be a runner?
Were runners allowed to know what they were delivering?
Essential Questions:
What made the Aztecs, Incas, and Mayans unique?
What do you think is the most important/ biggest difference between Ancient Civilizations and the way we live today?
Why do you think the people of the Ancient Civilizations had to live the way they did?
Common Core:
-Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson (RL.1.2)
-Ask and answer questions about key details in a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media (SL.1.2)
Vocab Level:
This activity is primarily based off of tier one words. However, students may learn new meanings for things such as the word“runner” as it pertains to something different in ancient times.
