Talking Statues
The image of the feather poncho is introduced to the class by projecting it for all the students to see. Basics about the poncho are shared including how feathers have been carefully stitched to make up the design of stylized owls and fish by expert Incan featherworkers.
Next, students are given a handout which the class will read together. This
handout includes an excerpt from the DK Eyewitness Book on Aztec, Inca, and Maya
(page 48) that describes why feathers were used and who was able to wear them.
Then, students are able to go up to the projected image and stand as though they
are wearing the poncho. Each child that comes up to the projection will be asked
the following questions:
Who are you?
What are you wearing?
Why are feathers important?
Essential Questions:
What made the Aztecs, Incas, and Mayans unique?
What do you think is the most important/biggest difference between Ancient Civilizations and the way we live today?
What is the most interesting aspect of the Ancient Civilizations?
